Norman Keith Egerton
From the Dominion 30th March 2002
An Upper Hutt man who pleaded guilty to 17 sex charges involving four girls was sentenced to seven and-a-half years in prison when he appeared in the High Court at Wellington. Norman Keith Egerton, 60, a beneficiary, had earlier pleaded guilty to two groups of charges, one dating back more than 20 years and the other to last year. The historical charges related to one victim. The offences committed last year involved three girls, whom Egerton had encouraged to visit his home by supplying them with alcohol and cigarettes. Defence lawyer Paul Paino said Egerton had tried to get help after the historical offending, seeking alcohol counselling at Queen Mary Hospital in Hanmer Springs in 1985.
He had disclosed his sex offending and had some treatment. He was motivated to tackle his problems and was undergoing a programme for sexual offenders, Mr Paino said. However, Crown prosecutor Kate Feltham said Egerton had "already received considerable assistance", having undergone the Stop programme for sexual offenders between 1996 and 1998.
In sentencing Egerton, Justice Neazor said the victims, all of whom were under the age of 16, had been affected to differing degrees. Of the three most recent victims, all aged 15, one was left feeling a degree of personal responsibility, as she had introduced the other two to Egerton, Justice Neazor said. "There's no escape from it, the fault was yours.
"It's not only unlawful, but very wrong for an adult man to create and take advantage of such an offence with such young girls. That's why the law is there - to protect them. It's to your credit that you have accepted responsibility for these things." He sentenced Egerton to five and-a-half years for the offences committed in the 1970s and 1980s and two years for those committed last year. The sentences were to be served cumulatively - a total of seven and-a-half years.
