From NZ Herald story 7th December 1996
A Waikato man who smashed a woman with a wrench was jailed for 15 years yesterday. In the High Court at Hamilton Justice Hammond said the "brutal totally unprovoked attack" by Leo Darin Goodwin came only after two years after he was jailed for a "very bad sexual attack" in Australia.
Goodwin, aged 25, a Morrinsville forecourt attendant, followed the woman out of a Te Aroha rugby club prize giving about 2am on September 8. He took a wrench out of the toolkit in his car, followed the 22-year-old woman, struck her from behind on the back of the head and dragged her into a park. When she struggled he punched her several times and bashed her again with the wrench, breaking her nose, before raping her.
In the Australia case Goodwin attacked a woman with a knife (which we have been advised had no blade ) while trying to have sex with her. Justice Hammond declined to impose a sentence of preventive detention which would have put Goodwin behind bars indefinitely. That sentence was "reserved for beyond redemption." Earlier Goodwin’s lawyer, Mr Herman Roose said Goodwin had shown remorse.
Goodwin was also sentenced to a concurrent term of three years jail on a charge of rendering the woman incapable of resisting. He had pleaded guilty to charges he will not be eligible for parole after 10 years. The victim who was in court for the sentencing, said later she was pleased with the length of the sentence. "It’s a good result, I don’t think any sentence is long enough, but you’ve got to stick to the rules."
