David Patrick Hansen
In the Palmerston North High Court, Justice MacKenzie took a starting point of 16 years but reduced the sentence by 6 years to reflect Hansen's early guilty plea, lack of previous convictions, youth at the time of first offending and other mitigating factors.

A repeat child sex offender has escaped an indefinite jail sentence for a second time, but has been warned that it is his last chance for rehabilitation. One of his victims, now aged 15, told the court in her victim impact statement: "I know my mum felt I was her broken child. There are days I look in the mirror and think of myself as broken, too." David Patrick Hansen, 48, will start a Kia Marama treatment programme for child sex abusers at the end of June while he serves a jail term that was extended to 12 years by Justice John Fogarty in the High Court at Christchurch today.
At Hansen's sentencing in 2009 on 29 child sex abuse charges, he was given a 10-year jail sentence with a minimum non-parole term of six years. Today's sentencing effectively adds two years to the sentence though the non-parole term has not been adjusted. Hansen had been sent to the High Court for sentencing and a possible term of preventive detention after admitting a charge of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection and two or doing an indecent act on a child. They involved two girls aged seven and eight. These offences were committed before his 2009 sentencing but after the 29 child sex offences involving both girls and boys, for which he got the 10-year term.
Justice Fogarty told Hansen today: "You should realise this is your last opportunity to rehabilitate yourself. If you come out of proison and offend again like this, it is a virtual certainty that you would get a sentence of preventive detention and there would be a real question mark over when you would be released." The victim, who came to the sentencing with her mother today, told the court that the memories of the abuse by Hansen had come flooding back to her while she was watching television with a friend and the subject of child abuse came up. "I must have somehow blocked it out for many years," she said. Her mother had been very upset when she shared the "secret" with her. The teenager said: "I don't understand how he made me feel okay at the time. He somehow made out that it was normal for an adult to do that stuff to a child." She said she had felt disgusted afterwards, but had tried to be strong.
