Luke Graham Hetherington
A Kaitaia man who spent years in prison for the manslaughter of his partner has been jailed for more than 13 years for sex offences against a disabled girl.
Preventive detention wasn't ordered for Luke Graham Hetherington, 47 - who indecently assaulted then raped a disabled teenager - when he appeared in the High Court at Whangarei yesterday, despite two previous convictions for sexual offending.
Hetherington was instead sentenced yesterday to 13 years and six months in prison on one charge of rape, two of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection, one of indecent assault and another of threatening to kill. A minimum non parole period of eight years was ordered.
He was found guilty by a jury in Kaikohe District Court in May and the case was referred to the High Court for sentencing after the Crown called for preventive detention.
It emerged in court yesterday that apart from two previous convictions of a similar nature, Hetherington was jailed for nine years in 2002 for the manslaughter of his partner, Margaret Waterhouse in Orakei, within three weeks of being released from jail for assaulting Ms Waterhouse.
His latest offending took place in a house in Northland in 2011.
