A former Palmerston North teacher who sexually abused young boys over a 24-year period has been sent back to prison for historic sex offending. Derek Leslie Humphreys, 51, appeared in the Hamilton District Court for sentencing yesterday after earlier pleading guilty to unlawful sexual connection and indecent assault. Humphreys had previously, in June 2001, been sentenced to eight years' jail after admitting 19 charges of sex offences against 10 boys. Crown prosecutor Sheila Cameron told the court Humphreys' offending had occurred between 1976 and 2000 while he was a school teacher. She said the latest charges related to offending which occurred at an end-of-year camp at Castlepoint Beach, near Masterton, in 1991.
At the camp, Humphreys had arranged to share a cabin with a 13-year-old student and one evening encouraged the boy to drink alcohol with him, to the point where the boy lost consciousness. The boy slipped in and out of consciousness over the next 36 hours, during which time Humphreys had sexually abused him. Ms Cameron said the offending was premeditative and represented a major breach of trust.
"The victim was the pawn of the offender in every sense." He had been a top student but after the abuse had left school without qualifications, was unemployed and had attempted suicide twice. Humphreys' lawyer, Michael Robb, said Humphreys was genuinely remorseful and offered no excuse for his offending. Humphreys had taken active steps to address his offending and had changed his life to ensure he had no contact with youth.
Judge Robert Spear told Humphreys that he had achieved a great deal of popularity as a charismatic and successful teacher but "sadly there was a darker side to your involvement with your young charges at that intermediate school". Judge Spear noted Humphreys' offending had had a dramatic effect on his victim. "To put it bluntly, you have ruined his life."
Humphreys, who was on parole after serving four years of his eight-year sentence was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment, to be served concurrently with his current sentence.
