Jack Carey Jermyn

A 75-year-old man wept and bade a tearful goodbye to his wife as he began a two-and-a-half year prison term for the sexual abuse of two teenage boys in the 1970s. Defence counsel Bill McMenamin said Jack Carey Jermyn had been too overcome with emotion to read all the victim impact reports. "The probation officer doesn't mince his words," Mr McMenamin said. "The accused appears weighed down by shame and revulsion for what he was capable of doing."
At the Christchurch District Court sentencing, Judge Stephen Erber told the retired shopkeeper: "This is a very sad case, from your point of view and the two victims." Jermyn admitted three charges of indecently assaulting two boys under the age of 16. Judge Erber recounted how Jermyn met the boys, then aged 13 and 14, and abused one of them for three years, and the other for a year. The abuse included fondling, watching pornography, masturbation, and oral sex.
"The effect on the victims has been very grave indeed," he said. One's education had been affected and his childhood memories had been tainted. His sexual development had been compromised. "He has become an unhappy man." The other had become introverted, lacked confidence, had psychological problems, and had difficulty with intimate relationships.
The judge spoke of Jermyn's long and happy marriage to a wife who continued to support him. "She can be fairly regarded as another victim of this offending." He took Jermyn's obvious remorse - he wept throughout the sentencing - into account as he imposed the prison term. Then he asked Crown prosecutor Rosemary Roberts: "Please facilitate his wife's access to him. Obviously, he wants to speak to her."
