Brent Allan Jones

A former Tokoroa teacher apologised to the two now-adult victims of his sexual offending, which included acts on animals, before being sentenced to jail in the High Court at Rotorua. Brent Allan Jones, 32 was yesterday sentenced to seven years and 10 months' imprisonment after pleading guilty to 10 charges including sexual violation by rape of a woman, indecent assault of a woman, indecent assault of children under 12, indecent assault of a youth aged between 12 and 16, and indecent acts with dogs and cats.
The offences were committed between January 1993 and May this year at Christchurch and Tokoroa. In sentencing Jones, Justice Potter described his actions as "utterly odious" and hoped he would be more committed to a prison therapy programme than a programme to stop sexual abuse which he took part in four years ago. Before he was sentenced, Jones addressed the court and apologised to his two adult victims, one of whom was in the courtroom. "I need to express how sorry I am to the people I have worked with, students, and the community of Tokoroa," he said.
Defence counsel Nicholas Dutch said his client went voluntarily to Tokoroa police in May this year to confess his offences. Crown prosecutor Jonothan Briscoe said Jones deliberately put himself in situations where he could carry out his fantasies. He noted that there were few cases where a man appeared over offences against adults, children and animals.
