The Press, Christchurch, June 19th, 1997
Life sentences have been handed down for the two men convicted of murdering bank teller Bill Brown at Naenae in January. Anton Henare Matenga, 19, was sentenced to eight years for aggravated robbery as well, and Chris Daniel Lemalie, 22, was sentenced to 10 years for robbery. Matenga also received a four- year sentence for kidnapping seven tellers and clients at the bank.
In the High Court in Wellington yesterday Justice Ellis said Matenga's feet had barely touched the ground outside Rimutaka Prison - where he had finished a sentence for breaching periodic detention - when Lemalie dressed and armed him for the robbery. The man described as "masterminding" the robbery was Mark Taiko Mahaki
