Shiloh Dallas Mareikura
A mentally unwell man who stabbed an Opunake father to death believed his victim was a "snake person" and part of group of people living in the coastal town who conspired against him.
Shiloh Dallas Mareikura had a previous history of threats against his victim, Opunake father Desroe Bishop, and had been banned from the town, but was given leave to attend a tangi there by Corrections, on the day before the murder.
Details of the circumstances behind the murder of Bishop, 37, in September last year were revealed at the High Court in New Plymouth during the sentencing of Mareikura for the crime today. He pleaded guilty to the murder charge in October and was sentenced to life in jail with a 15 year minimum non-parole period.
