James Edward Maxwell
From the Daily News 5th September 2009
One of the oldest men ever to be sent to jail will have his son for company after James Edward Maxwell was sent down for three and-a-half years yesterday for historical sex offences. Maxwell, 64, unemployed of New Plymouth, admitted three representative charges of indecent assault against two victims between 1967 and 1980. His father, James Temutu Maxwell, 89, was sentenced to 18 months' jail in July, also on historical sex charges.
Crown prosecutor Justin Marinovich called for a jail sentence of between three and four years. He cited the emotional damage Maxwell junior had done to his victims as a major consideration for sentencing Judge Allan Roberts to consider. "The impact is evident," he said. "These women have had to deal with this offending throughout their lives."
Defence counsel Turitea Bolstad said a shorter sentence of between two and three years' jail was more appropriate, given her client had pleaded guilty. In handing down sentence, Judge Roberts said Maxwell had shown no empathy towards his victims.
