Jules Pierre Nicholas Mikus
NZ Herald story here and another story detailing his extensive previous criminal history.
Has now lodged a convictions appeal causing anguish for Teresas family, story here. Mikus has thankfully had his application for leave to appeal the conviction dismissed on all grounds, story here.
If he had been locked up for life on the second or third offence Teresa would be alive today. We believe Mikus is a filthy paedophilic psychopath who should never be released into society again and should die in jail.
From the Dominion Post 2nd November 2002
Jules Mikus the man sentenced yesterday for murdering a schoolgirl in 1987, had missed out on preventive detention by only a few months in 1984 after he was found guilty of assault with intent to rape. Then, he was 24, and needed to be 25 before he could qualify for preventive detention. He did have a record of previous sexual offending which otherwise qualified him. Mikus pleaded not guilty and was found guilty twice, after having had a retrial. He had put forward an alibi which was rejected by both juries. He had tried to lure a 14-year-old girl into his Lower Hutt home to rape her.
He was jailed for two years at the second sentencing and ordered to undergo psychiatric treatment, but did not. Justice Gendall said yesterday that the law at the time was applied. "One of the sentencing judges said that had you been but a little older you would have qualified for a term of preventive detention." The judge also quoted from a probation report written in 1984. It said: "He lives to some degree in a `fantasy' world. He has committed four previous offences of a sexual assault of young girls and in view of that and the previous factors, it is considered that he is in need of psychiatric assistance."
Justice Gendall said looking at the nature and gravity of Mikus' offending over many years, the category and ages of the victims, the absence of any response to rehabilitative efforts, absence of remorse or acceptance of responsibility, his predilection for offending and the need to protect society, he was a prime candidate for preventive detention. In reports yesterday a psychiatrist advised the judge that Mikus exhibited almost complete denial and tended to rationalise the crimes he did admit to. Mikus had said he was innocent of all sexual offences. "Mr Mikus let me disabuse you of the nonsense you talk . . . you are unquestionably guilty . . . you had better stop deluding yourself now as to your criminal, paedophiliac behaviour, because you deceive no one."
Justice Gendall said release before the end of his life could only be granted by the Parole Board. He ordered that his sentencing notes and the reports be given to the Parole Board if Mikus had "the temerity," to seek parole. He said Mikus showed no remorse or contrition. The judge said Mikus had 78 previous convictions. In 1987 when he killed Teresa Cormack he had 29. They included three for indecent assault of girls aged between 12- 16, one of assault with intent to rape and one of having sex with a girl who was six. Mikus also has multiple convictions for theft, burglary, disqualified driving, fraud, excess breath alcohol, breach of bail, drugs convictions, 11 for disturbing and offensive use of a telephone and bigamy.
Justice Gendall said terms of imprisonment, borstal, periodic detention and probation had been to no avail. The judge said since 1987 Mikus had committed no sex crimes. "I suspect you well knew that as your blood samples had been taken in 1987 and offending of a sexual nature might be more easily detectable given that the police had a sample already from you," Justice Gendall said. He said since killing Teresa, Mikus had sponged off the taxpayers of New Zealand, avoiding apprehension and committing 49 more offences.
