Kerry Brian Mottram

Convicted child sex offender Kerry Brian Mottram is a repeat offender who was jailed 20 years ago for abusing a young girl. Mottram, 39, a concreter of Inglewood, was found guilty by a jury in March on charges of attempted rape, sexual violation and indecencies on a girl aged under 12. It was revealed in the New Plymouth District Court yesterday that Mottram had been been sentenced to four years in jail in 1988 for sexually offending against a five-year-old girl over a three-year period.
His latest offending, in 2004 and 2005, lifted the tariff, with Judge Allan Roberts sentencing him to six years' jail, with a minimum non-parole period of four years. Mottram's wife, his mother and father were in the front row of the public gallery to hear Crown prosecutor Justin Marinovich describe how Mottram had used the threat of violence to intimidate his young victim. "(He said) if she said anything he would hunt her down and kill her. She was petrified." Defence counsel Julian Hannam told the court Mottram was hopeful of appealing his conviction.
Judge Roberts said it was his right to maintain his stance of innocence but he would not receive any help or counselling in prison while he maintained his position. The judge told Mottram that his offending had had a profound effect on his victim, who had run away from home and had spent a large amount of time fearful that he would make good his threats. He said Mottram's offending was "something beneath contempt".

A New Plymouth jury has found a man guilty of sexually abusing a young girl who stayed with him during school holidays. Kerry Brian Mottram, 39, a concreter of Inglewood , denied five charges of attempted rape, sexual violation, and indecencies on a girl under the age of 12. He also pleaded not guilty to threatening to kill the girl if she told anyone. Mottram was found guilty on all six counts.
Yesterday, the complainant's father told the court that he had not phoned Mottram's wife to ask if his daughter could stay with her and Mottram after the allegations of abuse were made. "I didn't want anything to do with him," said the complainant's father, who cannot be named to protect her identity. The father said there were many phone calls trying to get to the bottom of what actually occurred. Mottram will be sentenced on May 1 at the New Plymouth District Court.

A man had sexually abused a young girl for three years, threatening to track her down and kill her if she told, the New Plymouth District Court heard yesterday. Kerry Brian Mottram, 39, a concreter of Inglewood, has denied six charges, five of sexual abuse and one of threatening to kill a girl aged between nine and 12. His alleged victim has her name permanently suppressed.
Yesterday, Crown prosecutor Justin Marinovich told the jury of six men and six women that the offending began when Mottram was playfighting with the girl when she was staying at his home. It started when the victim was nine and continued until he allegedly attempted to rape her and she told a woman at the house. Over the years, she had been too frightened to tell anyone because he had controlled her by threats saying if she spoke of what he did to her he would hunt her down and kill her, Mr Marinovich said.
