NZ Herald story 10th April 2003
A woman subjected her flatmate to a 90-minute beating after he failed to clean the house, Palmerston North District Court was told. Rosa Murcott, 24, of Palmerston North, pleaded guilty to a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Police withdrew a charge of attempted murder. Murcott admitted to police that she was furious after coming home with her partner one night to find their house had not been cleaned. The ensuing attack on her flatmate included beatings with fists, boots and "every conceivable part" of a length of driftwood.
Murcott said she had told her 34-year-old flatmate to tidy up while she and her boyfriend, who also lived there, went out for the evening. The pair returned home about 3.30am to find the house still untidy and the man asleep. Murcott's partner went into the man's bedroom and began to beat him. The fight continued into the hall. As the man tried to leave the property, he was grabbed by Murcott's partner and dragged back inside. The flatmate later joined Murcott's partner in the lounge, where Murcott, furious that he had not been beaten enough, began to punch him about the head and body. He did not try to fight back. Murcott told police that she had wanted to put the man's nose "on the other side of his face".
She also took the 1.2m piece of driftwood and continued beating the man as he sat on a couch. The assault stopped only when he fell to the floor unconscious. Murcott's partner, who also faces an assault charge, ended the attack by putting himself between her and the victim. Emergency services and police found the man unconscious and having difficulty breathing. He was taken to the intensive care unit of Palmerston North Hospital with a collapsed lung. Murcott and her partner initially told police they came home to find their flatmate had been attacked. The victim spent 30 days in a drug-induced coma and on life support. He is still recovering. Murcott was remanded in custody to May 12 for a pre-sentence report.
