A 20-year-old Christchurch man has ended up in custody after police alleged he assaulted a woman who was holding a baby, injuring both of them in a Christmas Day incident. Police described it as a serious and sustained assault on the woman, when Adam Ngahuru appeared before Judge Brian Callaghan in Christchurch District Court today. He is charged with causing the woman grievous bodily harm, assaulting a one-year-old, and intentionally damaging a car on Christmas Day.
Defence counsel Michael Starling said Ngahuru was young and could live with his sister away from the complainants. Judge Brian Callaghan was given a written opposition to bail from the police. He said the police alleged the assault on the woman was serious and sustained, and remanded Ngahuru in custody to January 6th.
