Frank Petrum Ngaropo
A man who used his martial arts skills to hold a woman down while he sexually violated her was jailed for 10 years today.
Frank Petrum Ngaropo, 42, was sentenced on charges of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection, injuring with intent to injure, kidnapping and threatening to kill.
In Christchurch District Court, Crown prosecutor Deirdre Elsmore said Ngaropo and the woman had sex, but the woman was reluctant, and further into the night she wanted him to stop.
Judge Colin Doherty said Ngaropo was found guilty of the charges by a jury last year.
He said the incident occurred in July 2010 when Ngaropo put the woman in a martial arts hold to sexually violate her.
When she attempted to get to a neighbour's house, Ngaropo dragged her back inside and threatened to kill her.
He strangled her, and she thought she was going to pass out. When he let her go to the toilet, she escaped.
In her victim-impact report, she said she now had nightmares and panic attacks.
Judge Doherty said Ngaropo had three previous convictions for assault.
