A Hamilton woman lured her former partner to an isolated spot where she encouraged two attackers to beat and rob the man. Gillian Thelma Patton, 34, and Daniel Taniora Thompson, 40, were sentenced on Friday at the Hamilton District Court to 4 1/2 years' jail for the assault. Patton had pleaded guilty to injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and two charges of theft. She also admitted 19 charges of using a document for pecuniary advantage and was sentenced to a cumulative sentence of four months.
Thompson was found guilty of injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and theft following a jury trial. The court heard Patton used a friend's mobile phone to message her former partner, pretending to be another woman, and arranged to meet the man at an isolated location on the outskirts of Hamilton. When the man arrived and discovered it was Patton, she convinced him to stay, saying she needed to talk about their son. While Patton distracted the victim, Thompson and an unnamed associate appeared from behind a hedge and assaulted the man. As he was punched and kicked to the ground, Patton encouraged and directed the attackers.
The man suffered a suspected fractured cheekbone as well as cuts and bruises to his face and body, and his wallet and car keys were stolen. In sentencing, Judge Robert Wolff said Thompson denied involvement in the attack but "the case against him was extraordinarily compelling", and Thompson had recruited the other male attacker. Defence counsel Sharyn Green, representing Patton, questioned the seriousness of the assault, saying the victim had not suffered permanent injuries. Judge Wolff, however, said the complainant had feared for his life.
