An 18-year-old Otorohanga man who repeatedly raped and sodomised two children has been jailed for five years thanks to CYF's intervention.
Steven Victor Pearson, a vat operator, pleaded guilty to four charges of sexual violation by rape, 10 of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection and three charges of indecent assault. In the Hamilton District Court yesterday, Judge Robert Spear said it was one of the most difficult sentencing cases he had ever encountered. Minutes later, he rejected Pearson's bid for name suppression, citing the public interest in the case.
"I fear for you. I wonder what you will become and what will become of you. However, you are only 18 years of age and you are still young enough put this behind you to some degree. That will only occur if you face up to what you have done."
The offending, which often involved significant force, threats of violence and cruelty, started in 2001 when Pearson was 14 and his victims were aged under 10. It continued until late last year. The male victim said the offending had occurred between one and four times each month. He was often forced to choose between anal or oral sex.
The abuse stopped in October last year when Child Youth and Family was alerted after the female victim was overheard talking about Pearson trying to have sex with her. The victims faced a bleak future, Judge Spear said.
"This is without question serious sex offending, particularly because the age of your young victims and the persistent and regular offending. If you were an adult you would be looking at a sentence of imprisonment of 14 years," the judge said.
The mitigating factors were his early guilty plea, full confession and no previous record. Pearson had "bizarre aspects" in his personality and psychological make-up, as he showed no remorse, had no insight into the harm he caused and tried to blame others for his actions. He also had an unhealthy fascination with firearms, Judge Spear said. Probation reports called for "urgent psychological intervention" as he was at risk of self-harm.
