Aaron Tutarangi Petersen
From NZ Lawyer 20th January 2007
A teenaged Mongrel Mob prospect with drug problems and an intellectual disability has been sentenced and ordered to pay reparation for his part in a vicious late-night attack on a German exchange student. The Upper Hutt 17-year-old, who cannot be named, and two others accosted the 18-year-old student about 2am on April 30 on Fergusson Drive. Armed with a claw hammer, steel bar and imitation pistol, the trio robbed the student of his cellphone and wallet, then threatened him if he did not hand over his eftpos card and Pin number. The former Upper Hutt College pupil was hit in the head with the hammer, suffering a broken eye socket, fractured nose and cut head, before escaping on foot. He needed reconstructive surgery. Aaron Tutarangi Petersen, 15, of Upper Hutt, was jailed for 2 and a half years for the attack and a 24-year-old man is in custody in Christchurch awaiting a depositions hearing.
Appearing for sentencing in Upper Hutt Youth Court this week on charges of aggravated robbery and causing grievous bodily harm with intent to injure as a party, the 17-year-old's lawyer, Shane Robinson, said his client had played only a minor role in the attack, telling the victim to keep quiet and "not look at their faces". Diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and a mild intellectual disability, the youth dreamed of becoming a police officer. He had broken down at a family group conference because of his remorse and made an apology video which he planned to send to his victim and the victim's host family. His actions that night were the result of his becoming "embroiled" in gang culture. Judge John Walker sentenced him to five months' supervision and ordered him to pay $1000 reparation. The student's host father said the sentence was appropriate.
