A man has escaped jail on a charge of possessing an objectionable publicationafter a police search turned up a computer disk with images of young childrenin sex acts with adult men.
Gregory Edwin Piper, 33, a student, was sentenced to 300 hours community workafter he admitted the charge. Christchurch District Court Judge Jane Farish said that on August 29 last year, under Piper's mattress, police found a disk containing 48 images of young girls aged five to 10 engaged in sexual acts with men. The images were graphic and disturbing.
"A lot of people in your position think possessing indecent material isvictimless. It is not, and if there was not a market, the offending would notbe occurring," the judge said. Prosecutor Tim Mackenzie noted the possession occurred in Piper's home, and called for jail with a starting point of six to nine months.
The judge said that in July, Piper was jailed for eight months on charges oftheft by a person in a special relationship, and five of obtaining bydeception. He was released on home detention.Piper was also sentenced to supervision for nine months, and ordered, by thejudge, to take treatment and counselling as directed.
