A Rotorua man who broke into a couple's home and sexually violated a woman while she was sleeping has been jailed for three years and six months. Mita Enoka Pirika, 28, appeared in the Rotorua District Court yesterday for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to a charge each of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection and burglary. Judge James Weir said on the night of June 9 the victim and her partner were asleep on a mattress in the lounge of a Western Heights property. Pirika broke into the house through an unlocked door and lay down next to the woman and started kissing her before sexually violating her.
The victim woke up and initially thought it was her partner but then realised it was not. She went to wake her partner and Pirika fled. In a victim impact report the victim said she was "angry, scared and felt dirty". She constantly cried and had suffered anxiety attacks and depression and the couple had to move out of the property which had created ongoing accommodation difficulties. Judge Weir said Pirika had told a psychiatrist he was drunk at the time. He knew what he had done was wrong and felt shamed. Judge Weir said Pirika had two previous convictions for doing an indecent act with intent to assault.
