A convicted sex offender who was the first person to fight extended supervision has been jailed for six months' after moving to a new address in Levin when he was told not to by his probation officer.
Moana Patrick Rimene, 63, pleaded guilty to one charge of breaching his extended supervision order in Hastings District Court on Thursday. In March 2005 Rimene was placed under an extended supervision order for eight years and six months after a law was passed the previous year. This allowed the court to impose parole-like conditions for up to 10 years after a sentence had been completed. The order expires on September 13, 2013.
Rimene had challenged the order, telling the judge that he could not change his past but wanted a say in what happened in his future. Rimene was convicted in 1977 of abducting and raping a nine or 10-year-old girl, and in 1992 was sentenced to 11 years and nine months for sexual violation and indecent assaults involving six girls. He was released in 2001 after completing a sex offenders' programme.
On September 29 this year he requested a change of address to reside in Bath St, Levin, but this was rejected by his parole officer as unsuitable. On October 13 he obtained the keys to the address and on October 15 confirmed to his parole officer that he had moved address. Judge Rea said Rimene had been fully aware of what his obligations were under the extended supervision order.
He said it was clear Rimene had been looking to push things as far as he could and he had been convicted in 2007 for a similar offence. Rimene was sentenced to six months' imprisonment
