John Paul Romana
NZ Herald story 10th September 2003
A convicted rapist who raped a Korean English language student three weeks after his release from prison has been sent to jail for 11 years and three months. The High Court in Auckland heard yesterday that after completing his seven and-a-half year rape sentence, John Paul Romana took part in the January rape of a 19-year-old woman. The woman was lured into a car park in Upper Queen St by Romana's accomplice, Kevin Murray Petersen, on the pretence of seeking directions.
Romana and Petersen pleaded guilty to taking turns to rape the woman and commit other indecencies on her. Justice Peter Salmon sentenced Romana, 29, to 11 years and three months in prison and Petersen 30, to eight years and three months. Both were ordered to serve a minimum two-thirds of their term. The judge said the effect on the young woman was horrendous. A cultural difficulty in her discussing what had happened with her parents meant "she is alone in trying to deal with the effects of what you two did to her".
