Dominion Post, 8th November, 2003
Simon was sentenced in Hamilton District Court in 1990 to preventive detention for the rape, sexual violation and kidnapping of a 20-year-old woman early on New Year's Day in rural Waikato . In the 10 years before that, he had committed three rapes, one attempted rape, an indecent assault and had abducted two of his victims. The officer in charge of the case, Detective Bob Bevege, described Simon's conduct as the worst sexual offending he had come across in 20 years. In sentencing Simon, Judge Robert Fisher noted that he had been a persistent offender since the age 10. "The only way women and the community can be protected from you is to keep you in custody for a long time," he said..
Grant Lawrence Simon was sentenced to 10 years for the latest in a long line of sadistic abductions and rapes in the Hamilton area. Simon was on medication to cure his perverse violent sexual nature, although psychiatric reports claimed he was not mentally ill. (New Truth, 8 Feb, 1991, case from 22 June, 1990).
