Tony Waru Takiari
NZ Lawyer report 16th January 2007
A teenager who raped a disabled 19-year-old woman at a vacant Upper Hutt school then returned to a takeaway shop to pick up his dinner order. Tony Waru Takiari, 18, of Upper Hutt, stalked the woman, who is believed to be visually impaired, after seeing her walk past the shop where he was waiting for food near Trentham railway station about 6pm on July 10. He kept his distance to remain undetected then grabbed her outside Brentwood School, a police summary of facts says. Leading her into the darkened school grounds, he warned the frightened woman not to cry out or "do anything stupid" "She verbally pleaded with her attacker to let her go but the defendant ignored her pleas and continued on with his plan," the police statement said. "The victim's anxiety levels increased dramatically as she became more fearful of her assailant and became more and more concerned with her personal welfare and safety."
Takiari led the woman past empty classrooms to a locked toilet block but could not get in. He started kissing her and touching her groin area, then told her to lie on her back on a concrete path. Forcing himself on her, he removed her clothes and tossed them away then raped and indecently assaulted her. The woman lay motionless throughout the ordeal, waiting for the attack to end. She was then told to dress, go home and remain quiet. Takiari returned to the shop to pick up his order before heading home with his meal. He later admitted the rape, telling police he "just wanted to have sex". The unemployed teen pleaded guilty in Upper Hutt District Court yesterday to one charge of sexual violation by rape, two of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection and one representative indecent assault charge. His parents were at court to see his guilty plea. Judge James O'Donovan remanded him on bail for sentencing in Wellington District Court on March 9.
