A five-year-old girl was diagnosed with gonorrhoea three weeks after a Rotorua teenager attempted to rape her, police say.Anton Wharetaua Taylor, 19, unemployed, appeared in Rotorua District Court yesterday and pleaded guilty to charges of sexually violating the girl and attempting to rape her in Rotorua between April 1 and May 15 last year.
Taylor was initially charged with rape but the charge was yesterday reduced to attempted rape after discussions between the Crown and Taylor's lawyer. Taylor was at the girl's home when he removed her clothing and sexually violated her, the court was told.
He then tried to rape her but was unsuccessful. The court was told the girl was distressed but didn't know what to do. Taylor was subsequently told to stay away from the house because the girl said she did not like him. However, her family did not know at that stage what he had done to her.About three weeks later the girl was admitted to Rotorua Hospital where she was diagnosed with gonorrhoea. When spoken to by police Taylor admitted what he had done and said he had contracted gonorrhoea about three to four years previously. Judge James Weir remanded Taylor in custody for sentencing on May 28.
