Brendon Thomas has been sentenced to 12 years jail for savagely raping, sodomising and terrorising a woman. Sentencing Thomas, of Hawke's Bay, to a minimum eight years behind bars, Justice Gendall said in the High Court at Napier that Thomas, 22, told his 28-year-old victim that he had come to kill her. The woman pleaded for her life but Thomas raped her twice, sodomised her twice, and forced her to perform indignities on herself. Asking for a sentence of preventive detention, crown prosecutor Jonathan Krebs said the crime, in Hastings on October 21, was disgusting and degrading.
He said Thomas repeatedly threatened to kill the woman, drew a boning knife across her throat, drawing blood, and asked: "Are you ready to die?" during a violent sex attack that lasted from 1.30am till daybreak. The victim impact report made "unusually chilling reading," Mr Krebs said. The police summary of facts said Thomas told the woman he was going to cut off her breast and send it to her previous partner.
"He began sharpening the knife in front of her and then rested the blade against her breast."Thomas made his own closing statement, denying responsibility for the attack. Mr Krebs said he had shown a disturbing lack of remorse. Psychological and psychiatric reports said there was a high risk of re-offending, he said.
Defence lawyer Bill Calver, who did not represent Thomas at his trial but made submissions at sentencing, said Thomas still asserted his innocence. Mr Calver said Thomas had had a troubled childhood and was taken from his adoptive mother by the authorities.
Thomas said he had been a resident of almost all the former Department of Social Welfare homes. Mr Calver said Thomas's uncle (actor Cliff Curtis) had tried to help but Thomas had continued to offend. Justice Gendall said Thomas threatened to mutilate his victim's breasts and sex organs, and assaulted her, leaving her bruised and with a cut across her throat. But the psychological injuries were "much more severe". Thomas had 74 convictions, six for sex offences, including two for indecent assaults on young girls, for which he was jailed before the October attack.
