Cary Grant Thurgood
A man who beat and stabbed his ex-partner to death then tried to blame his son for the murder has been jailed for a minimum of 19 years.
Cary Grant Thurgood was found guilty of the murder of mother-of-four Leanne Kingston in a trial at the Auckland High Court last year.
He hid in her South Auckland house on August 9, 2009, then attacked her with the broken handle of a garden grubber and a knife.
The frenzied attack in the toilet inflicted 26 separate injuries including stab wounds to the neck and breasts and ''defensive wounds" on her hands where she tried to grab the knife.
Justice Cooper said Kingston died from choking on her own blood.
Thurgood told police his son had confessed to the murder though he recanted and pleaded guilty to attempting to pervert the course of justice on the first day of his trial.
He maintained his innocence to the end despite police finding items linked to the crime and his blood-stained clothes dumped in a skip behind his work.
