Murray Donald White
From the Waikato Times 15th July 1998
An escaped paedophile told police when he was recaptured last night that he had wanted to see his daughter. Murray White, who escaped from a Waikeria Prison work party on Saturday night, today pleaded guilty in the Hamilton District Court to a charge of escaping from custody. White, 28, escaped from Waikeria Prison as he was getting into a van after working in the kitchen on Saturday night. He was caught last night hiding in a Hamilton garage. He told police he had escaped from prison to see his daughter. A second sex offender who escaped with White, Anthony Hutton, was today still at large.
Judge Michael Hobbs remanded White in custody for a pre-sentence report. He is to reappear in court on July 29. Judge Hobbs heard that White was seen by a member of the public walking along Thomson Ave , Dinsdale, about 7.20pm yesterday. Police discovered White when they searched a garage. He ran off and a short time later was caught by a police dog. He had received several dog bites which required treatment before he was taken into custody. White was sentenced to preventive detention in the High Court at Hamilton on June 2, 1994, for a number of sex crimes. Meanwhile, a concentrated police effort to search the homes of former girlfriends has failed to find Hutton.
The Auckland High Court was told White was highly motivated to reform and had shown remorse and empathy with his victims. However he was assessed as remaining a "high risk" of reoffending because of his past history.
