Christchurch Press story 15th November 2010
A Christchurch man who posed as a teenager to groom and have sex with four girls has been sentenced to six years' imprisonment in the Christchurch District Court today. Clement Wilkinson, 35, unemployed, was sentenced today after pleading guilty to four charges of grooming, 10 of sexual connection with a young person aged 12 to 16, eight of possessing objectionable material, and three of receiving stolen property.
All of Wilkinson's victims were present in court for an emotional sentencing, with one bursting into tears when he appeared in the dock. One of the victims - a now 15-year-old girl who passed out in the back of Wilkinson's car after he plied her with alcohol - told the court how he duped her into becoming his "sexual plaything". "If I'd know he was 34, I'd not have let him touch me," she said. Judge Brian Callaghan said Wilkinson's behaviour was a parent's worse nightmare. He sentenced Wilkinson to nine years in jail for the series of offences before allowing a discount of a third for his guilty plea.
Wilkinson had posed as a 17-year-old student called Chris Hood to meet with and have sex with at least four girls he contacted through a social networking website, Tagged.com. He was only caught when One girl's mother realised Wilkinson was not who he said he was and contacted police, prompting an investigation. More than 10,000 images of young children were later found on his computer. The summary said that when Wilkinson was told of the charges he would face, he told police he was "glad he had been caught".
