Andrew Timothy Wilson

For more than five years, Tauranga's Andrew Timothy Wilson sexually molested a little girl.
But she was only one of the paedophile's numerous victims.
Others included children in a city playground, a girl he hugged and kissed in a video store and 12-year-old twins he considered nude-model material, offering to put their pictures on a website, a high court judge has said.
Justice Murray Gilbert recounted the history of the 42-year-old's offending in the High Court at Rotorua before sentencing him to preventive detention. This is an open-ended sentence generally meted out to the sexually depraved who are unable to stop their offending.
After a jury which was to try him in the Tauranga District Court had been empanelled this year, Wilson pleaded guilty to two charges of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection and one representative charge of sexual violation, meaning his offending happened more than once. These charges related to the child he violated from January 2005 until October 2010.
He admitted a further charge of indecent assault on a child under 12 and the attempted abduction of another youngster with the intention of having unlawful sexual connection with her.
Those two charges related to approaches to children in a Tauranga playground last February.
The district court judge declined to sentence Wilson, referring him to the higher court where a more severe sentence could be imposed.
Referring to the playground charges, the judge said Wilson, whom he described as a binge drinker, had gone to a park after a drinking spree. There he pushed a boy on his back, indecently assaulting him.
An adult called police but when they arrived the child had vanished. Related articles:
Wilson moved to a flying fox where he indecently assaulted a 6-year-old girl before taking her by the hand. This made adults present suspicious that he was planning to take her from the park. They intervened but Wilson retorted he was simply taking her to see some sights.
Referring to the ongoing offending against the child Wilson had molested over a protracted period, Justice Gilbert said his offending had affected her so badly it could well haunt her for the rest of her life.
Referring to a victim-impact statement prepared on her behalf by a psychologist, the judge said the child had been so traumatised by Wilson's offending and his stalking her that she was sent to another school. He tracked her down and she again started missing school.
"Your offending seriously affected her education, she thought she was stupid because she couldn't study, developed self-loathing and low self-esteem," Justice Gilbert told Wilson.
The only time she was free of Wilson's attentions was when he was in jail, also for sexual offending.
Once out, he offended against her again despite being given a first-strike warning. The judge also noted Wilson had offended when on bail.
In prison, Wilson had been found with pictures of children in his cell and had performed indecent acts while looking at magazine pictures of celebrities, often photographed with their young daughters.
"You continued your deviant interests ... it is quite clear you have a propensity for offending against young girls," the judge told Wilson.
Despite 29 sessions with psychologists, Wilson had continued to offend.
His lawyer, Bill Nabney, said Wilson was anxious to receive treatment and engage in any that was offered.
Crown solicitor Greg Hollister Jones pressed for the preventive-detention sentence.
For the playground charges, the judge added a two-year prison term to be served concurrently with his detention period. He noted Wilson had already been issued with his second three-strikes warning.

A repeat sex offender who kissed and fondled two young girls and told them they should consider nude modelling because they had "nice bodies" has been jailed. Andrew Timothy Wilson, 39, was sentenced to 16 months' jail in Tauranga District Court yesterday after a jury found him guilty on three counts of indecent assault against a female aged under 12 and two counts of sexual grooming. Judge Christopher Harding said there were several aggravating factors in Wilson's case . In 2007, Wilson was convicted for an indecent act on a 6-year-old child and in 2011 he was convicted for offensive behaviour against another 6-year-old girl in a video store.
These previous convictions and the "vulnerable age and circumstances" of Wilson's victims in this case counted against him, Judge Harding said. The offending began after Wilson visited the girls' home. After the adults began drinking he asked to stay the night. The court heard that when a woman was distracted on the phone in another part of the house, Wilson began telling the girls they had nice bodies but when they grew up to be teenagers they would be fat. Wilson told them they should consider nude modelling and offered to show them pictures of other children modelling nude so they knew what positions to pose. He also suggested other children had made a lot of money by nude modelling. Wilson placed his hand inside a pyjama top of one of the girls, caressing her upper torso. Later in the evening, he also entered the girls' darkened bedroom and placed his open mouth on their faces.
In his summing up, Judge Harding said pre-sentencing reports showed there was no remorse from Wilson and little motivation for rehabilitation. "You see yourself as a victim. You have problems dealing with alcohol ... there are concerns you have a high risk of reoffending with a high risk of harm to others." Judge Harding referred to having received letters earlier that day from so-called "references". "They were not references at all. They were three letters from your family which consisted of nothing but an attack on the process and decision of the jury." Defence counsel Nicholas Dutch said his client's offending was on the lower end of the scale and there was no evidence to suggest it was possible Wilson could have carried out the grooming, as he did not have a camera or computer. Wilson remained impassive as Judge Harding sentenced him.
