Ki Hyun Youn

A brutal sex attack has put a South Korean-born teenager behind bars and facing inevitable deportation. Sentencing Ki Hyun Youn to eight years jail, with a minimum term of four years, on a charge of sexual violation, Christchurch District Court Judge Gary MacAskill told the Japanese national that he had permanently scarred the lives of the victim and her husband.
They felt they could no longer live at the address where the attack occurred and left, he said. The judge said that on April 9 the complainant, a woman Youn knew, was at home in central Christchurch. Youn had asked to use the toilet then left, but returned on the pretext of leaving his cellphone behind. He grabbed the victim around the neck, threatened her with a knife and forced her to transfer $800 through internet banking. Youn, 19, then forced her to undress and took photographs with her cellphone, then sexually violated her and forced her to perform oral sex.
He left with her cellphone, having disabled her landline, and then used her bank card to get $1300. "The victim said her life had been turned upside down and that she could no longer sleep at the property. She said words could not express how much she and her husband had been emotionally damaged," the judge said. Youn admitted 13 charges, including sexual violation, kidnapping, theft, aggravated robbery, unlawfully taking a vehicle and dishonestly using documents.
Lawyer Tony Greig said Youn pleaded guilty early and offered full reparation within a year. Greig argued against a minimum term, saying jail would be especially arduous for Youn. The judge said the aggravating factors included repeated breaches of trust, each of the victims being known to Youn as a friend, acquaintance or employer. In one case, Youn had left a woman friend stranded after having taken her handbag and using her bank card to get $800. The judge said the appropriate starting point was 13 years jail. He ordered Youn to pay reparation of $12,273.
