Regan Joseph Andy Hutchinson

A Hamilton teenager involved in a robbery of St Andrews' Bryant Park dairy was yesterday sentenced to three years in prison. Blair Slater, 16, pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery and was convicted on June 29 in the youth court. He was transferred to the district court for sentencing yesterday. Judge Louis Bidois said that on March 14 Slater and an associate, Regan Joseph Andy Hutchinson, talked about how they were short of money and decided to commit a robbery. They obtained a .22 rifle and bullets and travelled past the dairy several times before Hutchinson put the rifle down his trousers and went into the shop.
He noticed there were several customers and a female shopkeeper inside and returned to the vehicle. The two then disguised themselves and returned to the dairy. The shopkeeper was serving a 14-year-old boy at the time and both feared for their safety when Slater and Hutchinson threatened them. With Slater encouraging him, Hutchinson fired a shot which sent a bullet flying past the shopkeeper. Another shot was discharged accidentally into Hutchinson's foot. Money and cigarettes were taken in the robbery. Judge Bidois said Slater's sentence should reflect some parity with his co-offender, sentenced in June to four years and nine months' jail.
Aggravating factors included the fact there were two offenders and the use of a weapon. Among the mitigating factors were Slater's guilty plea on his second court appearance, his youth, remorse shown, support from his family, the fact he was a first-time offender, his co-operation with police and motivation to rehabilitate. Slater's lawyer Gavin Boot acknowledged a sentence of imprisonment was inevitable but asked the judge to make it "less than crushing". Judge Bidois said the sentence could hardly be described that way.
