Three brothers who attacked a man who would not share his takeaways with them have pleaded guilty to assault. The New Plymouth District Court heard yesterday that Jamie, 29, Caleb, 22, and Mitchell Whittaker, 23, were visiting bars in the CBD on June 10 when they argued with a man who wouldn't share his food. Jamie, who was initially the peacemaker, used "haymaker" style punches to hit the man in the head. A second man, who tried to calm the brothers down, was also attacked while the first victim was held down.
One victim suffered a cut above the eye and grazing to his elbow and thigh, and the other bruising and swelling to the face. The incident was captured on New Plymouth CBD crime cameras in the early hours of the morning. Police prosecutor Lewis Sutton said when arrested Jamie said he was "standing up for his brothers". Yesterday Jamie pleaded guilty to two charges of assault with intent to injure, Mitchell to one charge of assault with intent to injure and Caleb to two charges of assault. Judge Alistair Garland remanded all three on bail for sentencing on August 29.
