A woman who was raped and beaten during their relationship went to "hell and back" , a judge says.
Wayne Anthony Jonathan Houpapa, 31, appeared for sentence on 12 charges before Judge Michael Crosbie in the Dunedin District Court on Tuesday.
On those charges, which included two of sexual violation by rape, he was sentenced to 14 years and six months' jail.
The court heard how Houpapa and his former partner, who was in court for the sentencing, had been in a relationship for eight years
"You took her to hell and back," Judge Crosbie said.
That included Houpapa subjecting her to repeated beatings while under the influence of alcohol and/or cannabis and their daughter seeing him rape his mother following a beating.
Houpapa also abducted their then two-year-old son from his Dunedin pre-school, reaching speeds of more than 170kmh trying to flee police in Canterbury.
Judge Crosbie praised the "brave way" the victim gave her evidence at the trial, detailing a relationship where violence was ever present.
That included sleeping on the couch a certain way in order to minimise any drunken blows at the hands of Houpapa
Judge Crosbie hoped other women in similar relationships would be encouraged by her bravery in coming forward.
The former couple met in Lawrence in 2005, where Houpapa worked as a shearer – a job that resulted in the young family moving to several other towns around New Zealand, with Houpapa often absent for months on end.
In March 2011, Houpapa, while on a trip to Rotorua, became angry when she threatened to leave him and punched her with a closed fist in the back of a van.
He then pinned her down and raped her.
The second rape was during Easter 2014. Houpapa was staying with her in Dunedin but became angry when she again pushed for the relationship to end.
He punched her in front of their two children and then followed her into the bedroom punching her in the chest.
He later held her down and when asked to stop replied, "I'm not f...... stopping".
It was during the rape when their daughter walked into the bedroom.
Houpapa, despite protection orders in place, visited her Dunedin home the night before his trial.
The judge noted Houpapa had acknowledged his offending, pleaded guilty after his victim gave her evidence at the trial and had the support of his family.
"You are not beyond help," Judge Crosbie said before delivering his sentence.
