Steven Lawrence Haggerty
Steven Lawrence Haggerty stood trial in the High Court at Wellington in October 2005 on an indictment containing 34 counts of sexual offending against young women and girls. There were four complainants. The offending relating to three of them arose in the period between 1976 and 1983. In respect of the fourth complainant, the offending occurred in 1999-2000 and 2002.
At the jury trial presided over by MacKenzie J, Mr Haggerty was convicted on 31 counts:
(a) six counts of rape (four were representative);
(b) ten counts of doing an indecent act on a girl under 12 (seven were representative);
(c) six counts of inducing a girl to do an indecent act (all were representative);
(d) four counts of indecent assault on a girl under 12 (three were representative);
(e) four counts of indecent assault on a girl between 12 and 16 (one was representative); and
(f) one count of indecent assault on a woman over 16.
He was sentenced to an effective term of nine years’ imprisonment.
