Monday, 16 August 2010: Gang members seek bail after leadership dispute shooting
Twenty-three Mongrel Mob members and associates allegedly involved in the shooting two other members in a gang leadership dispute in northern Hawkes Bay appeared in the Gisborne District Court today to apply for bail.
But only two had their applications processed and one had the charges against him dropped.
The remaining 20 bail applications were adjourned with the defendants being further remanded in custody by consent.
They will reappear in the Gisborne or Wairoa District Courts on various dates over the next week.
The gang members face charges of unlawful assembly and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm at their gang headquarters in Wairoa on August 10.
A 39-year-old gang member was shot in the face and a 42-year-old member was shot in the head, arm and leg during the fracas.
Police said the shooting appeared to be the result of an internal gang leadership dispute and did not involve rival groups.
Norton Hunia (17) was today granted bail and will reappear in the Wairoa District Court on September 2.
His bail conditions include a 24-hour curfew unless accompanied by the two people looking after him, being forbidden to contact gang associates or to wear gang regalia, and not to come within 100km of Wairoa, unless appearing in court.
Glenn Junior Te Kahu (32) was declined bail and remanded to reappear in Wairoa District Court on September 2.
Police withdrew charges against another man.
